The males are bright crimson red with tall crests, black masks, and orange beaks. The females are beautiful, with warm brownish-red coloring, black masks, and bright orange beaks.

These birds are comfortable feeding on the ground but will go to tray feeders and others if the need for food is great. Their favourite foods include sunflower, apples, corn, and peanuts. They will eat suet if it is available and in reach.
